VST Sales Anecdotes – Part 2 of 10

I’m guessing some of you reading this might know us as VST Venues, or VST Group, or maybe just VST. Well, the VST part actually stands for Virtual Sales Team.

And yes, it does what it says on the tin.

Where it started:Β

By 2006 I’d already been in the contact centre industry for ten years. I remember the moment vividly, sitting in the office at my last job with a pad of paper, just scribbling down ideas. That itch to start something of my own had been building for a while, and it was finally time to give it a name.

First attempt: Smart Sales Solutions – I used my own surname; it had a nice ring to it. It was crossed out.

Then The Cold Call Room, or Campus Calling, because the original idea was actually to use students to make the calls. Then I thought of the Appointment Makers – on and on it went. Some had already been used, some just sounded too generic, and way too much like every other agency in the space.

Then it clicked

It’s a sales team – where is it? It’s remote, so it’s virtual.

Wait – Virtual Sales Team.

Kind of rolls off the tongue and shortens nicely to VST. And here’s the bit I was actually quite proud of at the time – I had a hunch it would end up being a search term in its own right. People typing in exactly what they were looking for, rather than getting lost in the sea of β€œcall centre” and β€œcontact centre” services that all sounded the same.

I went straight to Google to see nobody already had it.

Then off to GoDaddy where I registered every sensible variation of virtualsalesteam I could think of.

All of this took place about six months before we actually opened the doors.

Nineteen years later – and here we are.

Nineteen years on, and it’s a name that’s genuinely stood the test of time. In fact, better than that – it did exactly what I hoped it would and it’s become a search term in its own right. One of our best decisions for sure, nothing more satisfying when you ask someone what they typed in, and they say “well I was looking for a virtual sales team so that’s what I typed in!”Β πŸ™‚

Not bad for an hour (don’t tell my old boss!) with a pad of paper and a list of names that mostly deserved to be crossed out.

This is the second in our series of ten stories from two decades on the phones. Next up, back to the calling floor for another one.
